Ask for an Estimate of the Service Cost
You might be surprised to learn that you can ask your doctor or healthcare provider for an estimated cost of a procedure, test, or service before scheduling an appointment or receiving care.
If the estimated cost is too high, address the price before receiving the service. Ask whether the provider offers a cash discount, financial assistance, or a payment plan. You can also ask whether a less expensive alternative is available.
For routine procedures, tests, and appointments, it may be possible to shop around and compare prices with other doctors, clinics, outpatient facilities, or independent providers in your area.
When comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the same service and the same level of care. Ask whether the quoted price includes the provider’s fee, facility fee, laboratory or imaging charges, anesthesia, and other related costs.
